Scenes and cameras

The scene is a picture of where your movie plays. Add another camera of it, and you have an edit.

On screen

A camera at a glance

Each camera shows its picture, or the still with your presenter.

  1. 1

    The cameras

Every picture of this place. The first, the Main camera, sets the movie's shape.

  2. 2

    Face small

The face is only a few pixels tall here - a closer camera helps.

  3. 3

    Picture or With presenter

The scene as photographed, with its screens - or the still.

  4. 4

    With your presenter

Every shot from this camera starts on this still.

  5. 5

    New Still Next Time

Placement off? A different still is drawn next time.

Draw a set

No picture? Describe the place. The app draws it, empty where your presenter will stand.

  1. 1

    Kind of place

News studio, keynote stage, late-night set and twenty more.

  2. 2

    In your words

    Whatever the kind leaves out.

  3. 3

    Details

Size, furnishings, screens, audience, light, colour, style.

  4. 4

    The picture

Ready in a minute or two.

  5. 5

    Regenerate

    Lights up after any change.

  6. 6

    Add to Scene

What the app read

Each camera's settings, in plain text you can correct.

  1. 1

    Framing

Wide, medium or close-up. Decides where questions and last words go.

  2. 2

Nobody to replace, someone the presenter replaces, or your presenter already.

  3. 3

    Screens

    Change the selection.

  4. 4

    Place

What the picture reader saw. Used in every prompt for this camera.

A good scene picture

  • Landscape, at least 1024 pixels wide. The first camera, the Main camera, sets the movie’s shape.
  • Clearly a place to speak: stage, desk, lectern, studio.
  • Room for a person, sized for your framing.
  • Empty — or with someone to replace: set In the picture to Someone to replace.

No picture? Draw one

  1. 1 On the Scene page, press Generate… (or File ▸ Generate a Scene…).
  2. 2 Pick the kind of place — news studio, keynote stage, late-night set, podcast studio and twenty more — and describe what matters in a sentence.
  3. 3 Set the framing and the presenter’s spot; under Details, size, furnishings, screens, audience, light, colour and style.
  4. 4 Press Generate. The picture is ready in a minute or two.
  5. 5 Change anything to light up Regenerate. Then choose Add to Scene.

Sets are drawn empty where your presenter stands, without text or logos. Another Variation redraws the same settings.

More than one camera

Add two or three pictures of the same place — wide from the back, medium from the side, a close-up — each with its framing. The movie opens wide, cuts close for questions and emphatic sentences, and ends wide for the last paragraph. Cuts fall between sentences.

Cameras must show the same room. Different stages look like a mistake, not a cut.

What the app read

Read the Pictures (Movie ▸ Make One Step, ⌥⌘1) has the picture reader note each camera’s kind of place and where a speaker would stand — plain text under Details, used in every prompt for that camera. Correct it if wrong.

Check before filming

Place the Presenter (Movie ▸ Make One Step, ⌥⌘4) draws the stills without filming: minutes, not an hour. Placement wrong? Use New Still Next Time.

Change any shot's camera later in the Shots list on the Movie page. Only that shot is filmed again.
